The Locker Room

Latest dispatches from the political trail

Many news organizations have picked up the story about a political action committee organized by the Republican Governors Association to support the election of Pat McCrory. Under a federal court decision (and just-passed bill in the legislature that brings state law into conformity with it) a PAC can raise and spend unlimited sums to benefit a candidate as long as the PAC does not coordinate its activities with the candidate.

• In New Bern Wednesday at the unveiling of a new GOP county headquarters, McCrory urges a party outreach to “Reagan Democrats” and calls more attention to his disagreement with Beverly Perdue on offshore drilling. Further to the South, Perdue makes a campaign appearance in Jacksonville to tout the advance of sophisticated health-care options in Southeastern NC.

The Charlotte Observer's Jack Betts blogs about another issue where Perdue has staked a position in the past: replacing the current coastal management commission, full of part-time appointees, with a professional regulatory agency that would resemble the Utilities Commission.
