Who Was John Locke?

The John Locke Foundation sometimes get calls from people wishing to “speak to Mr. Locke.” Such a conversation might be a challenge, since Locke has been dead for almost three centuries.

John Locke (1632-1704) was an English philosopher whose writings inspired Thomas Jefferson and the other Founders. As secretary to a proprietor of the Carolina Colony, he also helped write the Fundamental Constitution of Carolina in 1669. His views on individual rights and limited government represent the political vision JLF seeks to restore. And Locke was a great believer in the value of policy research and debate. “To prejudge other men’s notions before we have looked into them,” he wrote, “is not to show their darkness but to put out our own eyes.”
