The Truth? They Can’t Handle the Truth!

That’s one reason why the John Locke Foundation, North Carolina’s leading think tank and government watchdog, was founded 15 years ago. The “truth” is what JLF uncovers and distributes across North Carolina through its newspaper (Carolina Journal), radio show, editorial columns, research reports, events, issue guides, and web sites devoted to state news and politics, public policy, education reform, local government, and the Charlotte region.

Over the years, we’ve identified hundreds of millions of dollars in wasteful state spending, attacked unneeded and costly regulations, exposed mismanagement and corruption in government, even helped uncover scandals that resulted in former North Carolina officials going to prison for abusing the public trust.

And who are “they” that can’t handle the truth? The politicians, bureaucrats, activists, media liberals, and special interest groups that we often call North Carolina’s “political class.” They think they know best how the rest of us should live – and how best to spend our hard-earned money. Unfortunately, what they really mean is:

• Plowing billions of tax dollars into mass-transit projects that few will ride.
• Squandering millions of tax dollars on highways and airports designed to score political points, not improve North Carolina transportation.
• And frittering away millions more on welfare programs, political activism at our state universities, and dubious schemes for “economic development” that amount to corporate welfare.
