The latest fundraising reports show that two Triad state representatives — Marcus Brandon of High Point and Alma Adams from Greensboro — have raised the most money so far in the battle to replace Mel Watt. Brandon is the state’s only openly gay lawmaker and has gotten a lot of money from the LGBT community. Adams is best known for her fondness for hats. Because of or perhaps despite this, she’s raised a lot of money. From the UPoR:

Susan Roberts, a political scientist at Davidson College, said the two Guilford Democrats “have a distinctiveness that the other candidates in Mecklenburg County don’t yet have.”

So does this early fundraising advantage matter? Time will tell. We’ll learn more soon though, once candidate filling opens and we know who’s actually running.
