The City of Greensboro wants to trim its budget

The city could save another $679,000 by eliminating its funding to local nonprofits. The money goes to various organizations, including a portion for economic development efforts by organizations such as Downtown Greensboro Inc. and the Greensboro Economic Development Alliance.

…..The $200,000 the city spends to contract with the Greensboro Economic Development Alliance goes toward recruiting new companies to the area and keeping old ones, President Dan Lynch said.

“We have built a lot of momentum lately and that is important in economic development,” Lynch said.

I knew that’s the way it worked, but I’d never had it spelled out like that. Taxpayers fund the Alliance to recruit companies so we can turn around and offer up economic incentives.

Note, too that $200,000 to renovate luxury suites in the Greensboro Coliseum are on the block. While they’re at it, how about a cut in pay for Coliseum director Matt Brown. Nobody’s ever explained to me why he’s the highest paid city employee.
