The National Education Association named Lieutenant Commander Geordi La Forge of the USS Enterprise, also known as “LeVar Burton” or something, their highest honor – the Friend of Education Award.  He was a vocal critic of President Trump’s nomination of Betsy DeVos as secretary of education.

He is an unusual choice for the award because, as a youngster, “LeVar Burton” was fortunate enough to attend Catholic schools in California.  In other words, he enjoyed the kinds of educational opportunities that Secretary DeVos would like to extend to those with fewer resources.

On the other hand, Geordi La Forge attended Zefram Cochrane High School.  I do not know if Zefram Cochrane H.S. is a public school or if that concept even exists in the 24th century.

If Zefram Cochrane is something akin to a public school, perhaps Geordi La Forge would have been a more appropriate choice for the award.
