Asheville City Council approved directing staff to prepare a proposal for providing domestic benefits for employees. Councilman Jan Davis voted against the matter. He said he didn’t like the way council was backed into supporting it. Staff did not have a time to review the material, but three members of council were delivering on campaign promises. It was reported in the local daily that the matter already had the support of a majority on council. Mayor Bellamy agreed with Davis. Bill Russell, who might have voted against the measure also was out with strep throat. As expected, persons with domestic partners supported the measure, and the faith community deemed it an abomination. One citizens suggested they get healthcare policies from Blue Cross/Blue Shield rather than asking taxpayers to support their agenda.
