The New York Times created a chart of each state to show where people have moved since the year 1900.  It is interesting to see how North Carolina has changed.  In the early years, Virginia and South Carolina born people were the largest group to live in North Carolina.  Now 4% were born in New York, 8% are from other states in the Northeast, and 9% are from outside the United States.

  • In 1900 and 1910, 95% of NC’s population was born in NC
  • 1920 – 93%
  • 1930 – 90%
  • 1940 – 88%
  • 1950 – 87%
  • 1960 – 85%
  • 1970 – 82%
  • 1980 – 76%
  • 1990 – 70%
  • 2000 – 63%
  • 2012 – 58%
