The governor made a whitlestop in Asheville to tell citizens government needed another $1.5 billion in taxes if they didn’t want their children to go to waste. At a rally at T.C. Roberson High School, laid-off Teacher of the Year Mark Fulkerson intelligently said the state needed to make budget cuts and spend education dollars more appropriately. He was outnumbered by children who didn’t care to look at the state budget, but preferred to get hyped up over the fictitious binary implied by the governor: Either government continues wasteful spending or children will suffer.
I did not write a letter asking the governor to look at the JLF’s alternative budget, nor did I take the time to compile a list of items I would like cut from the budget, as I assumed any comments would just be lumped together as advocating for more taxes. If the governor wishes to increase her credibility, she should propose raising taxes or sacrificing line items that won’t excite the public so much.
Note: In a previous post, I said the tax hike was for “chi-i-i-ildren” when Perdue actually said “CHILDREN!”
