Forget what goes on in them, we can’t even get agreement on how full Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools really are.

Mecklenburg County Commissioner Bill James has called out school board vice-chair Kit Cramer on the utilization rates of Charlotte’s urban core schools. Cramer and her Chamber of Commerce allies are deliberating inflating student populations at non-suburban schools, James charges. Why? To better make the case that CMS needs to have a $427 million bond package approved by voters come November. If all schools are bursting at the seams, the thinking goes, then voters will move to fix that. Conversely, James argues that half-empty schools demonstrate that the problem is CMS spending priorities, not an absolute lack of cash, so the bond package is not needed.

Ms. Cramer, the floor is yours.

PS — CMS teachers will tell you that school system officials are already getting incredibly edgy about test scores this year, spending, you name it. Something may bust soon.
