Macon County taxpayer dollars accounted for more than a quarter-million dollars in spending on involuntary mental health commitments in 2013. . . . Sheriff’s offices are bound by law to handle involuntary mental health commitments. Transport officers spend countless hours on the road and days in hospital waiting rooms awaiting a bed to become available — often having to bring a person in crisis back home with no help.
