Today’s N&R predicts a long Greensboro City Council meeting tonight, considering the fact that two major rezoning cases are on the agenda. This makes it less likely, in my view, that two very interesting items on the consent agenda will be pulled.
It seems as though the city is looking to condemn two properties that stand in the way of the Battleground Rail Trail. The council will be asked to vote on a resolution authorizing the city attorney to begin proceedings to condemn parts of the two properties, one of which is owned by Havcom Enterprises, LLC, while the other is owned by Charles W. and Nena Griffin. “Suitable” purchase prices were not able to be negotiated, prompting the request to begin condemnation proceedings.
It should be noted that other cities are taking over property for greenways, most notably the Town of Cary, which is attaching greenways to sewer easements, much to the dismay of property owners who cite privacy concerns.
Again, I wonder if these items will draw attention from just one Greensboro city council member. My guess is the council is working under the assumption that no one in their right mind could be against a greenway. Unless you’re the unlucky property owner, that is.
