During this filing season, I’ve been thinking about George Washington. Sure, revisionists will deny anything praiseworthy one says about a historical figure, but I was taught that General Washington did not want to be the big cheese. He didn’t want to take power from the people so he could use it better. Repeating myself from a conversation yesterday, it is the tendency of healthy people to pursue vocations and avocations they think can make the world a better place. Some of us are wage slaves, I know. But, giving the benefit of a doubt, those who choose to run for public office probably think they can make the world a better place through government, or through coordinating centralized powers exacted from individuals. In other words, if the thought of being an elected politician disgusts you, maybe you ought to run.
