The North Carolina General Fund Education Lottery requires about three dollars in sales to spit out one dollar “for education.” To me that seems like a rather expensive apparatus for such little output ? how, I wondered, does it compare with other education fundraisers such as Krispy Kreme Doughnuts, candy bar sales, and magazine subscription drives?

Note: This of course is not to suggest that the State of North Carolina needs to become a monopoly provider of magazines, chocolates, or chocolate-covered creme-filled goods, either.
