A new research paper finds that American men like their Swedish counterparts, have taken on more child care duties as households have adjusted to the increasing workforce status of women. This has helped increase fertility rates in those countries. Women still take care of the children as well as their jobs in Japan, Italy, and other developed countries that have low fertility rates. In countries with very low female workforce participation, women specialize in household tasks.
Somehow the U.S. matches Sweden without subsidized child care for everyone.
