HB 958. AN ACT ADOPTING THE AMERICAN BULLFROG AS THE OFFICIAL AMPHIBIAN OF THE STATE OF NORTH CAROLINA.
Whereas, bullfrogs are some of the largest frogs found in North America, reaching six to seven inches as adults; and
Whereas, bullfrogs can range in color from yellowish green to brown and have distinctive deep, resonant croaks; and
Whereas, bullfrogs are carnivorous, eating insects, small mammals, fish, snakes, and other frogs; and
Whereas, bullfrogs are amphibians found in and around lakes, ponds, bogs, and streams throughout North Carolina; and
Whereas, bullfrogs play an important role in the State’s aquatic ecosystem; and
Whereas, the State of North Carolina does not have an official State amphibian; Now, therefore,
The General Assembly of North Carolina enacts: SECTION 1. Chapter 145 of the General Statutes is amended by adding the following new section to read:
? 145‑27. State amphibian.
The American bullfrog (Rana catesbeiana) is adopted as the official amphibian of the State of North Carolina.
