Sports team mascots should be awesome — something that inspires fear in the opposition, something you wouldn’t want to meet on a field of battle. Panthers, for instance. A Wolfpack. Devils (no matter the color). Pirates. Mountaineers and Catamounts. (I’m not sure about Hurricanes, since pencil-necked Weather Channel types can withstand them.)

But I have to hand it to the new Cary soccer team for choosing a truly unique and very frightening mascot: the RailHawks.

Those of us in the Triangle know what fearsome characters those rail hawks can be. They’ll take your property just like that! They never quit! Even when they’re beaten and what they’re doing isn’t working, they’re not backing down or giving an inch; rather, they just keep fighting well past the time reasonable men would quit!
