About a decade ago, the local daily was faulted for failing to cover crime. The city even accused of practicing racism, trying to segregate crime as something that happened to poor, unimportant black people in public housing. The real city was a posh and shining tourist mecca for lily white millionaires.

Perhaps a study revealed the new generation responds well to seventeen iterations of reverse psychology. Imagine yourself planning a trip to Western North Carolina and researching online. You go to the Buncombe County web site, and on the front page, you not only see an ad asking if you’re real enough, you see a headline telling folks not to stop to rescue “fake babies” left at the side of the road. It is bait to drag women into the woods. As a further tip, motorists are instructed not to wash flying eggs off their windshields. It is assumed the eggs are intended to mess up windshields so drivers will pull off the road and get mugged. It may, however, only be Ma and Pa Kettle pitching salmonella-infested eggs out the window.

Are we really so uncultured in Buncombe County? Yesterday, I saw two guys jump out of their cars and start fighting.
