Here’s a newspaper headline about a certain Catawba Valley city:

“Hickory: It’s not as boring as you think.”

It actually comes from the Hickory Daily Record, which presents a problem because the piece is trying to tout the region’s attractiveness as a place to live and recreate but the headline feels defensive, to say the least.

I can just imagine what we may see next in this new twist on civic boosterism:

?Charlotte: It?s not as snobby as some lower-class peons think.?

?Greensboro: It’s local politics aren?t as wild and corrupt as you think.?

?Durham: Our crime is not as evenly dispersed as you think.?

?Winston-Salem: It?s not as smoky as you think.?

?Asheville: We?re not as high as you think.?

?Fayetteville: It?s not as smutty as you think.?

?Cary: It?s not as ? oh, who are we kidding??
