If you’re not in a position to see the print version of this morning’s News & Observer, you’ll miss this headline at the top of the front page:

State campuses to cut jobs

The pleasant surprise is not the fact that the campuses are cutting jobs. The surprise arrives at the end of the article’s opening sentence:

The 16-campus UNC system expects to eliminate about 900 administrative
positions this year, an acknowledgement by university leaders of job
growth gone wild
. [Emphasis added.]

How refreshing. Government leaders acknowledge that they’re paying the price now for too much growth during economic good times. 

I seem to remember hearing something about this before … something about a spend-and-tax cycle.
