PART’s new regional bus service from Lexington starts Monday. The goal, says director Brent McKinney, is “to get people to work and back with a little bit of money left in their pocket.”

Oh, really:

McKinney said PART is funded 90 percent from state and federal funds and 10 percent by local governments, which is key because it helps secure the state and federal grants.

In May 2007, the Davidson County commissioners gave approval for the PART board to levy a 5 percent rental-car tax, which was then estimated to yield about $90,000 annually to help fund the bus service. McKinney said if the service grows and expands in Davidson County and into other counties, PART may have to ask the county to approve a second form of local revenue, which could be a license-tag tax of up to $5 per vehicle.

“More money in your pocket.” That’s a relative statement.
