Get ready Durham. You may have thought your legislative delegation opposed hiking the car registration fee, but guess what.

In a bit of a turnaround, the members of Durham’s General Assembly delegation are getting behind the city government’s request for a $5 increase in annual vehicle-registration fees.

State Rep. Paul Luebke, D-Durham, on Friday said all four of the county’s N.C. House members and both its senators are now on board with the idea of raising the fee from $10 to $15.

Confirmation for that came Sunday from state Sen. Floyd McKissick, D-Durham, who’s introduced a bill in that chamber that addresses the issue.

As of last week, “we were all pretty much of the opinion that $15 would float,” McKissick said.
