In his Freeman column today, Sheldon Richman takes a careful look at the latest bit of demagogic scapegoating in Washington, namely the contention that because oil companies are making large profits, we should end their “tax subsidies.” Not taxing something at 100 percent is not the same as a subsidy. What the politicians want, in their endless quest to squeeze more resources out of the private sector so they can waste them, is higher taxes on the oil producers. That would be harmful to all of us except the politicians and their favorites.
