Canton just received a planning grant of $25,000 from the North Carolina Rural Center. Upon completing the plan, the town may be eligible for receiving up to $100,000 more from the same source. The money is going to go toward another one of those identity-finding public input planning strategies. It is touted as empowering citizens to revitalize the economy. The problem is, the economy is constricting. Canton has many empty buildings. People, rather than inventing a product or finding an unfilled niche, think it is easier to fill the vacant buildings by sitting around and dreaming of a master plan that can be put in the hands of government.
