From April 1 to the end of this week, Holidays on the Net says the following national holidays will have transpired. Many UN holidays have also transpired, but they are not listed here. Which is not like the others?

National Fun Day, National Fun at Work Day, National Deep Dish Pizza Day, National Day of Hope, national D.A.R.E. Day, National Cherish an Antique Day, National Love Our Children Day, National Siblings Day, National Licorice Day, National Be Kind to Lawyers Day, National High Five Day, National That S***s Day, National Stress Awareness Day, National Wear Your Pajamas to Work Day, National Auctioneers Day, National Hanging Out Day, National Teach Children to Save Day, National Jelly Bean Day, National Dream Hotline, National Bulldogs Are Beautiful Day, National Go Birding Day, National Rebuilding Day, National Pet Parent’s Day, National Teach Children to Save Day, National Arbor Day, National Hairball Awareness Day, National Honesty Day, National Dance Day, National Homebrew Day, National Infertility Survival Day, National Two Different Colored Shoes Day, National Teacher Day, National Nurses Day, National Day of Prayer, National Day of Reason.

Why, it’s the National Day of Prayer, because it offends the ACLU. As a result, one gets the impression people want more government involvement in telling people how, when, and where to pray. I agree with the ACLU that We the People shouldn’t want the president to tell us to pray. Jesus already did that. But who said the president is commanding me to pray? Narry as I can figger, the offending text goes like this:

The President shall issue each year a proclamation designating the first Thursday in May as a National Day of Prayer on which the people of the United States may turn to God in prayer and meditation at churches, in groups, and as individuals. (36 USC Section 119)

That sounds like just another innocuous piece of paper intended to appease a special interest group. So what did I miss – besides an opportunity to enjoy deep dish pizza while blaming the president?
