It may not have been his intention, but Jim Morrill’s squib on Tariq Bokhari’s new civic group makes the effort sound insincere. Yes, the initial and current iteration of the group is overwhelmingly Republican, but the stated goal is to make it non-partisan while advancing the goals of limited and efficient government. Given the rather radical steps undertaken by new local majorities in recent days, it does not seem far-fetched that moderate Democrats and independents might find common cause with what Bokhari is trying to do.

Besides, didn’t the UPoR just spill a ton of ink fretting about the future of Charlotte’s leadership? Yet when a young, active guy like Bokhari does something to try and provide that leadership, he gets a tweaking right out of the box.

I would hope that the Uptown crowd has not already decided to root against this Strengthen Charlotte effort, or co-op it. The moment certainly seems ripe for some sort of permanent effort to refocus local government on core essentials. But we shall see.
