An after-school program in Charlotte-Mecklenburg was caught inflating its attendance numbers and saw its operating subsidy from the county government drop to zero.

So how did the Charlotte City Council react to this praiseworthy if belated act of fiscal responsibility? By increasing its subsidy to the program.

In the council?s defense, it must be noted that the amount is only about $600,000, far smaller than the $40 million spent on Charlotte?s new trolley line or the $200 million to be spent on a new uptown arena for an NBA franchise. See, it could have been worse.
