The American Journalism Review has published a lengthy post mortem on the news coverage of the Duke lacrosse case. It’s not flattering to any of the mainstream media, least of all The Herald-Sun of Durham and The New York Times. The News & Observer, which committed some of the most heinous journalistic offenses early on, gets somewhat of a reprieve from AJR for coming back strong with good coverage after shedding all its prejudices about rich frat boys. Only Duke’s school paper, The Chronicle, has no black marks on its ledger. Interesting that the most responsible journalism of all was by students.
