I’m telling you the Alamance County sheriff’s race is one to watch. Things are already really strange, and it’s not even Labor Day.

The Burlington Times-News reports the state Board of Elections will investigate a complaint filed against county commissioner Ann Vaughan claiming she asked him to accept $250 to donate to Ron Parrish, who’s challenging Sheriff Terry Johnson in the November election.

The question is whether or not Vaughan was serious when she made the offer to Mebane resident Eddie Shoe:

Shoe wrote that Vaughan’s remarks during their phone conversation last week “could have been said in jest or she could have been perfectly serious, I honestly don’t know which.”

Vaughan said on Monday that her remarks were in jest.

Shoe told the Times-News on Monday that he initially thought that Vaughan’s request was serious enough for him to file a complaint. “I actually thought she was bringing the money the next day,” he said. “I did not know what to do if she showed up with the money.”

Even more interesting is Shoe’s claim that he’s “caught up in” the Department of Justice investigation of the sheriff’s office. Shoe says DOJ has interviewed him, but the Times-News article does not say exactly how Shoe is “caught up” in the investigation.
