The N&R’s Allen Johnson on the Greensboro City Council’s 5-4 vote to kill (for now) the amphitheater up at the Greensboro Coliseum:

Frankly, as long as coliseum Managing Director Matt Brown could address the concerns of neighbors, I thought it was clever idea and an excellent use of available space on property already owned by the city.

It also would have added another dimension to the coliseum’s attractions and probably generated more revenue.

If money was the object, delaying the much pricier aquatics center would have seemed a more prudent move.

I wonder if the vote was more a reflection of general antipathy toward Brown and the coliseum than the pure merits of the project.

The Rhino’s John Hammer (unposted) says it will be interesting to see what happens now, because the “political powerhouse” Brown isn’t used to hearing ‘no’ from the City Council. Site work has been done, and no doubt Brown will argue it’s too late to turn back now.

Better the project never started, which I guess is why the City Council should have known about it before Brown spent the first $100k.
