Hooray! The state has raised taxes. Sales taxes are going up from 6.75 to 7.75%. Haywood County citizens get to pay 8% because the majority of voters thought it was a good idea. The state either had to raise taxes, lay off teachers, or release prisoners. Eliminating fluffy programs and bureaucratic overhead were never considered viable options. The state will also impose an income tax tax on all corporations that manage to turn a profit and “the highest individual wage-earners.” The taxes are temporary, which, historically, means they won’t go away. Some legislators want to tax everything that isn’t currently taxed, except lawyers and accountants, in the interest of equity. Lastly, the state will be collecting increased taxes on vices so advocates of the nanny state will have an incentive to “continue in sin that grace may abound.”
