From the N&O’s “Wake County School Growth Issues for Everybody!”

  • Fill classrooms to the limit. North Carolina set maximum average class sizes ? 21 students for kindergarten through third grade, for example. But the district is usually at the limit in areas where growth is heaviest.
  • Use more classroom trailers. But it could meantaking away space for playgrounds, athletic fields and student parking.
  • Go to split sessions in high school. Some students would attend classes in the morning, others in the afternoon and early evening.
  • Put more schools on the year-round calendar. Allelementary and middle schools might be converted.
  • Ask the state for permission to exceed class-sizelimits in younger grades. Administrators say that would hurt students academically.
  • Go to half-day kindergarten, which could free up elementary seats. The school board says childrenwould be hurt academically.
