I am alarmed by a recent decision of the American Medical Association to support researching what’s called “presumed consent” donation, a process that is a ghoulish intrusion into privacy and individual choice. My husband, Raleigh News and Observer op-ed columnist Rick Martinez, writes about the issue in today’s N&O. You’ll want to read it because this idea might very well be in this country’s future. You won’t find a more ardent supporter of voluntary organ donation than me. On Thanksgiving Day 1999, my 26-year-old nephew suffered an asthma attack and was declared brain dead. My family donated Aaron’s organs and tissues. His gift saved or enhanced the lives of dozens of people, including a man who was hours from death due to a failing heart. If presumed consent is adopted, it will be a terrible blow to a voluntary program that is saving lives every day and deserves support.
