Today’s Detroit News has a good column by Frank Beckmann on the folly of federal bailouts. Especially noteworthy is his opening quotation from Socialist Party candidate Norman Thomas: “The American people will never knowingly adopt socialism. but under the name of ‘liberalism’ they will adopt every fragment of the socialist program, until one day America will be a socialist nation, without knowing how it happened.”
If Thomas were still alive, I wonder how close he would say we were to his vision of a “socialist nation.”
