Researchers from Harvard and the University of Washington recently released a study which found an increase in mortality inequality between the rich and poor counties across the U.S. during the 80s and 90s.
So, what is causing the increase in the poor’s mortality rate? Personal choices and unhealthy lifestyles. The study shows that many deaths were the result of smoking-related diseases like lung cancer or diseases like diabetes linked to obesity.
Smoking- and obesity-related diseases, of course, are preventable by personal choices, aided by education and encouragement. You don’t need access to high-cost doctors and hospitals to quit smoking, get more exercise and eat less. Insurance is important, but it doesn’t give you a healthy lifestyle.
