I received an advert from a candidate today. Lest I upset McCain-Feingold, I will leave the candidate’s name off the excerpt below, and leave interpretation to the reader.

My reasons for running for Buncombe County Commission are threefold:

Our community urgently needs a cooperative, regional plan to tackle the challenges of growth and development. We need a vision for our future, to protect what we love and value about Buncombe County. We all know that Buncombe County is going to continue to grow, but we should demand that new growth reflect our community’s goals and values. We need the kinds of development that add to the character of the community, rather than degrade what makes Buncombe County a great place to live. The board of commissioners should provide the leadership this community and region deserve as it continues to grow.

My education, background and passion are in the field of improving public health. As Director of the YWCA, I see everyday what poverty means to families and children in our community. I see parents working two jobs, without health insurance, struggling to make ends meet. Almost 35% of the County’s budget is dedicated to health and human services. I have served on the Buncombe County Board of Health and hold a Master of Public Health from the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. It is important for the County Commission to include people with experience, knowledge and commitment to improving public health and building stronger families.

Asheville and Western North Carolina are emerging as national leaders for green jobs and clean, renewable energy. I am proud that our City Council committed to make all future city buildings green, and to reduce our global warming pollutants by 80%. I am eager to see Buncombe County provide stronger leadership as well. We can create the green jobs of the future right here in Buncombe County. Environmental stewardship is imperative to the security and prosperity of all future generations. Now is our moment to take action.
