Here?s something else for the horror file. Just as some Republicans have worked hard to get referenda on same-sex marriage before voters this year, in part to turn out conservatives to boost party chances for president and other offices, Democrats have succeeded in getting referenda on the ballot in November in the critical states of Florida and Nevada to turn out their base. Their ballot initiative would boost the minimum wage.

Kristina Wilfore of the left-wing Ballot Initiative Strategy Center explains that younger, poorer, and less educated folks may not show much interest in getting registered to vote and showing up on Election Day. But the minimum-wage initiative could change that. ?Telling people that they can vote to give themselves a raise is a powerful turnout tool,” she told Business Week.

So, how many of these voters realize that they are also voting themselves out of a job?
