Mainstream media types always say they just cover the news and don’t cover liberals any different than they cover conservatives. OK, we all know that’s bunk, but there couldn’t be a better indicator of it than two stories from The Associated Press today. On is on Rudy Giuliani pulling out of the Republican presidential race and the other is on John Edwards pulling out of the Democratic race. Here’s the lede on AP’s Giuliani story (no byline listed):

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) – Rudy Giuliani told supporters Wednesday he’s abandoning his bid for president and backing Republican rival and longtime friend John McCain.

I’d call that a pretty good, no-nonsense, objective lede. Nothing to complain about there. The reporter indicated no bias for or against the former New York City mayor. So, let’s compare the lede on the Edwards story by Nedra Pickler (emphasis added):

DENVER (AP) – Democrat John Edwards is exiting the presidential race Wednesday, ending a scrappy underdog bid in which he steered his rivals toward progressive ideals while grappling with family hardship that roused voters’ sympathies, The Associated Press has learned.

As I’ve said in the past, the media is the defense lawyer for Democrats and the prosecutor for Republicans. In this case, Edwards gets all the gloss, lionization and excuse-making that even a Johnny Cochran could muster.

It doesn’t get any clearer than these examples.
