Senator Tom Apodaca has introduced a bill proposing to eliminate using tax dollars to fund elections. The practice, known as candidate welfare, has attempted to “protect the constitutional rights” of candidates who could not garner enough support to compete with the Koch brothers’ war chest, and of voters who vote for underdogs with substantial campaign funding. The funds also contribute to the publication of that ever-so-helpful voters’ guide that tells us how long judicial candidates have been married and how many kids they have.
