Today, The News & Observer backs the idea of studying the creation of a legislative redistricting commission, as proposed last week by the North Carolina Coalition for Lobbying (and Government) Reform. But The N&O is off on one thing in its editorial:

The temptation to gerrymander is strong. Yet 12 states have solved the dilemma by shifting to appointed, independent redistricting commissions. The idea has been proposed in North Carolina before, but legislators have managed to ignore it.


I think the word “solved” is too strong, as I explained in 2004.
