For decades libertarians have broken questions of public policy into three broad categories–issues of war and peace, i.e. foreign policy; social issues, i.e. gay rights, drug legalization, etc. and economic issues. Everyone from the Cato Institute to the Libertarian Party have at one time or another described libertarians as being liberal on the first two and conservative on the third, suggesting that we have more in common with liberals than conservatives. If this is the case why have we never seen a liberty movement within the Democratic Party similar to what has been observed in the Republican Party with the Liberty Caucus and the rise of Ron and Rand Paul?
