Remarkable recoveries, however, are not foreign to doctors.

“We see these totally unexplained entities in medicine all the time,” said Dr. Mitchell Krucoff, a cardiologist at Duke University Hospital.

But, attaching a divine being to one of these incidents does not help in terms of systematic delivery of health care, said Krucoff, who is internationally known for his research on alternative medicine.

“How God answers prayers sometimes simply transcends any mechanistic causal logic that we can formulate,” he said. “The most ignorant thing you can do is pretend they don’t happen.”
