The Buncombe County Commissioners today ratified their strategic plan for the next year. The bulk of it is a recitation of general statutes, but that which the commissioners created contains only about one statement with which I agree. The document is rooted in the supposition that governments are created to form painless societies with safety nets for violators of traditional codes of conduct. As a mere example, the commissioners’ eight priorities are:
• Ensure Affordable Housing
• Preserve the Mountains Including Steep Slopes and Ridges
• Sustain Farming Livelihood
• Encourage Thoughtful Process of Land Subdivision and Development
• Improve Workforce Development Efforts
• Encourage Better Child Care Options
• Work To Increase Access To Health Care
• Maintain and Enhance Core Services.
The remainder of the content generated at the commissioners’ retreat is a wonderland, considering the oath of office.
