The Town of Boone’s Affordable Housing Task Force will be evaluating new methods. (I commend reporter Anna Oakes for not saying “methodologies.”) The group is now authorized to “study, identify, and recommend” incentives and identify specific properties that may be converted into affordable or workforce housing.

A study determined there was a surplus of student housing that was only going to get worse in the near-term. The study further concluded there was “no natural incentive” to correct the imbalance. Developers, however, felt nothing short of the force of government could compel them to build what they knew they could not sell. The word “affordable” would not apply to that which the market does not sustain.
