Previously, I posted an entry about a controversial billboard in Swain County. Now, more details are in the press. The sign advertises free or cheap family planning and other forms of birth control provided by the Swain County Health Department. Two billboards with the same message were purchased with just below $1000 in federal funding. The argument, of course, is that half the kids are trying to have babies, and 42% of the girls are succeeding in Swain. The unwanted kids of child parents drain the system because they consume government food and healthcare and can’t stay out of juvenile detention. Bill Albert, representing the National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy said if parents don’t like their kids seeing the sign, they should use it as a teaching experience and share their feeeeelings about it.
