In our continuing series of recognizing North Carolina public officials who exhibit common sense and principle about spending the taxpayers? money ? a series that, I fear, may not last all that long ? we today honor New Bern alderman Robert Raynor, Jr., who is up in arms about a plan to use city tax dollars rather than private foundation funds to restore the city’s old train station:

?New Bern Aldermen at least temporarily derailed restoration of Union Station, with Alderman Robert Raynor Jr. vowing that taxpayers would not be the gravy train for financing the project.

He went on to explain:

“I could not look taxpayers in the face if I voted for the city to provide a portion of funding to go along with the federal grant which is going to a building that does not belong to the city.”
