On September 23rd, 2003, Barbara Ehrenreich (author of Nickel and Dimed: On [Not] Getting by in America) and 5 other speakers will discuss and analyze the conditions and lives of low-wage workers in North Carolina. The teach-in will be held in 133 Rosenau Auditorium (School of Public Health, UNC-Chapel Hill) from 6 to 9 p.m.

The other speakers include: (1) Barbara Prear, Vice-President of the North Carolina Public Service Workers Union UE Local 150; (2) Dave Brannigan, a groundskeeper at UNC-CH and member of UE Local 150; (3) Sorien Schmidt, NC Justice and Community Development Center and one of the authors of the recent study “Working Hard is (Still) Not Enough;” (4) Ivan Parra, Latino Community Development Center; and (5) Michael Schwalbe, a professor in the Department of Sociology at NC State.

Rashmi Varma, a professor in the Department of English at the UNC-CH, will be the moderator.

This teach-in has been organized by undergraduate and graduate students at UNC-CH. All the speakers have waived their usual presentation fee and are paying their own expenses.

The co-sponsors are: Social and Economic Justice Minor, Department of Sociology, Women Studies, English Department, Progressive Faculty Network, SURGE (Students United for a Responsible Global Environment), CECV (the Campaign to End the Cycle of Violence), Student Action with Workers, Young Democrats, Carolina Women’s Center, the Campus Y and the Carolina Center for Public Service (CCPS).
