The federal government will be printing, borrowing, and/or taxing in order to provide Small Business Administration loans for enterprises not necessarily adversely affected by the I-40 rockslide. Recipients are located as much as 35 miles away from the rockslide, and several are not tourist-related. To qualify for a five- or six-digit, low-interest loan, businesses must demonstrate their losses are caused by the obstruction on the interstate, and not the cold weather and snowstorms or the overall economic downturn. To date, half of the 62 applicants have been rejected, but the SBA is soliciting additional takers.
