Kevin Geddings has resigned from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Planning Commission at the urging of county commissioners’ chairman Parks Helms.

Close, real close.

But if Helms wants to get to the root of the problem with state and local politics he needs to show some real political courage and call on House Speaker Jim Black to step down as well. Not only has Black failed the state as a whole with his embarassing political entanglements, he has long since failed Mecklenburg County in winning the county’s fair share of road and criminal justice funds from the Down East cabal Black serves in Raleigh.

Parks Helms has done the easy Right Thing. Now let’s see Helms — or any local Democrat for that matter — do the hard Right Thing.
