That statement does not constitute an endorsement, which would violate JLF’s nonprofit status. It just appears that Matheny’s on his way to another term, based on his competition in the District 3 City Council race.
While —like John Hammer —– I believe George Hartzman has some good ideas about city government taking on too much debt, he seems a little on the strange side, based on the book he authored which reminds Hammer of the “books that hippies in Chapel Hill carried around in the ’70s with random thoughts they wrote down with pencils, pens, crayons or whatever else they could find.”
Matheny’s other primary opponent, Jay Ovitorre, has said that “he would ‘make sure’ the ($7 billion) light rail between Raleigh and Greensboro would be built.” As you can probably imagine, that bothers me much more than his atheism.
